Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in December
It is the end of 2017! Crazy to think that this year is just about over. 2017 has, once again, been a very good year for movies and looks to only get stronger in December. The final month of the year goes out with a bang with some Oscar contenders, blockbusters, and my most anticipated movie of 2017. Here are my picks for the most exciting movies coming out in December.
5 – THE PHANTOM THREAD (Paul Thomas Anderson, December 25)
Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the best filmmakers we have working today. The man understands the craft of filmmaking as good as anyone and he always challenges the audience with every film he makes. His latest film, about a 1950’s dressmaker who finds a new muse, looks like PTA’s best version of a period love story, but we know it won’t be that conventional. But what makes The Phantom Thread even more special is that it is the final time we will ever see the great Daniel Day-Lewis grace the screen, as he announced his retirement from acting earlier this year. Day-Lewis is one of the greatest actors of all-time, giving committed, masterful performances in every movie. It will be sad to see him go, but there is no doubt that Anderson will send him off in style.
4 – THE POST (Steve Spielberg, December 22)
Steven Spielberg + Tom Hanks + Meryl Streep = Gold? One of the greatest filmmakers of our generation directing two of the best actors of our generation in a movie about the Washington Post uncovering a government secret is a cinematic dream come true. Spielberg has hit a career resurgence as of late, with Lincoln (2012) and Bridge of Spies (2015) marking a return to form for the great director. These movies aren’t exciting in the typical sense, but they show pieces of American history in a beautiful way. And we finally get to see the iconic Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep share a screen together. This is an Oscar favorite and one I hope is as good as the names attached.
3 – THE SHAPE OF WATER (Guillermo Del Toro, December 1)
I already had the pleasure of seeing the latest Guillermo Del Toro film and it is the definition of stunning. Del Toro has created something truly remarkable with this one. A beautiful adult fairy tale that will have your heart racing and soaring at the same time. Del Toro’s direction has never been better, and the acting is spectacular. My full review will be up later, but don’t miss this Del Toro masterpiece.
2 – THE DISASTER ARTIST (James Franco, December 1)
I loved, loved, loved The Disaster Artist. James Franco has made the most unconventional and weirdest inspirational film I have ever seen. The telling of how Tommy Wiseau’s legendarily bad The Room was created, Franco made a movie about artists and dreamers. Franco also gives one of the year’s best performances as Wiseau, in a wildly over-the-top, yet tragic performance. You can read my full review right here, but this is one of the best movies of 2017.
1 – STAR WARS – EPISODE VIII: THE LAST JEDI (Rain Johnson, December 15)
I mean, obviously. Anyone who knows me or knows this site knows how much of a Star Wars fan I am. The Force Awakens (2015) was one of the best movies of 2015 and a perfect introduction to a new trilogy and great film for old fans and new ones. The Last Jedi looks even better. Director Rian Johnson looks to take the trilogy to new levels in what looks like the darkest, most emotional Star Wars yet (yes, even more so that Empire). I’m excited to see the cast once again and cannot wait for a bigger role from Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker. The Last Jedi was my most anticipated movie of 2017 at the beginning of the year and soon, I will finally get to see it.
